DERBYSHIRE, UK – 16 June 2023 – An ensemble of four golf enthusiasts from across A1 Comms took on the challenge of completing 72 holes of golf in a single day to raise money for Alfreton Park School, the business’ Local Community Partner.

James Kay (Operations Manager), James Sisson (Brand and Experience Manager), Joe Butler (Head of Accounting) and Richard Severn (Business Systems Analyst and IT Support Team Leader) headed out to Alfreton Golf Club in the early hours of Monday 12th of June 2023 with the goal of finishing four rounds of golf before day’s end.

The challenge – which pro golfers typically complete over four days – was planned as part of fundraising efforts for Alfreton Park School, to aid in the completion of their Deer Shed Project. The school offers life-enhancing opportunities for students aged 2 to 19 with moderate to severe learning and physical difficulties. Completing the project would further help many students gain valuable work experience and life skills before heading out into their post-school careers.

Using the day of paid Volunteers’ Leave offered to all staff at A1 Comms, the four golfers teed off at 5am to ensure they had enough daylight to cover the considerable 36km distance across the day.

“The 72-hole charity golf day was an extremely difficult challenge. We had an early rise, but it was important that we chose a day in the summer to allow for the daylight needed,” said Joe Butler, Head of Accounting. “However, choosing a summer day brought its own challenges. Despite the weather being against us and the terrible standard of golf, the camaraderie of the lads and a worthy cause helped us push on.

By 7.30pm the group had managed to complete the challenge despite the scorching 28-degree heat, losing plenty of balls, gaining significant blisters and even getting caught in a thunderstorm toward the end – which the team agreed felt like a welcome relief.

Joe continued: “I’d like to thank Alfreton Golf Club for being excellent hosts and letting us use their beautiful course and everyone that generously contributed towards the day. Your donations are going toward a wonderful cause and will make a significant difference to the lives of the students at Alfreton Park School.”
